Today had been a good day. Rufus had made some good money playing his guitar outside the diner in Forks, he'd found some nice stones for his collection in the mountains. He'd bagged a good cougar and had himself plenty of its blood to last for a while. He had planned on sitting down at his campsite and reading his books when the wind shifted and he caught the scent of a vampire. Then another. And another. Three vampires. He sighed and headed toward the scent, staying downwind and he crouched in the bushes and watched. Studying their auras.
Darkness....and confusion....and anger. These were not 'good' people. Not based on their auras. Hatred and anger ruled their hearts. He couldn't let them any closer to the townspeople. He had to scare them away. Fighting them would be a last resort. Rufus walked out, into the open, "Leave. Do not go toward the town or toward the beach unless you wish to lose your lives. I have lived a thousand lifetimes and though I do not wish to, I will fight you and you will die." he said firmly, the three vampires looked at one another.
Two of them were women and one was a man and they all stared. The man spoke first, "You're only one. We're three. And we're strong." The women nodded and one of them chimed in, "Why don't you come with us cutie? My sister has her boyfriend. You can be mine."
".....I say this with the utmost respect young lady. Ew." Rufus said and then, they attacked. Rufus unleashed an attack of his own, dropping the lock on his own aura and manipulating the others'. Doing three at once was difficult, but it worked and they were distracted. He was currently using his aura blocking to close off all the emotions on one except for happiness, another one had everything but her sadness blocked and the final one felt nothing at all. He just stopped and stood there, looking dazed and confused.
Rufus attacked and while he did, he struggled to keep it together. He had no choice but to destroy them, so he decapitated the first one by leaping onto her back and twisting sharply, then pulling straight up. The other woman giggled like a fool but she stared like something was wrong. The other made a move to step forward but just like that, he was calm again. Rufus took out the second woman and then, went to the man. The man staggered and stumbled backward.
"What have you done to me? You killed my girlfriend. Why can't I feel rage? Or sadness? Or....or anything." he spoke in a low, emotionless tone but looked at the bodies of his girlfriend and her sister.
Rufus glared, "I blocked of your aura. You're a plague. You'd only spread terror and death. You can't be allowed to live." This sudden change in his speech pattern was one sign that he was losing control. He dived at the other vampire and took him out too, then patted himself down and set each body on fire with a lighter.
He staggered back, a small voice inside his head viciously whispered "Release me. Let me out. You've kept me here too long. I want out! It isn't enough. I. WANT. OUT!"
The vampire snarled lowly and dropped to his knees, "No." He growled, and closed his eyes, forcing the thoughts down. The other self. That voice struggled and had Jasper been there, he'd have been able to notice Rufus' emotions spiraling out of control before finally, his anger would fade. He opened his eyes and they were dark. Much darker than they'd been before.
