It was several hours until Jack had to report in for work, so the blind hybrid had decided to spend his day to himself having fun. Maybe he'd hang out in the park or get some ice cream. Something nice like that! The boy walked confidently down the street, his walking staff tap tapping on the ground in front of him. He had no need for it of course, but the humans thought he did since he was in fact, blind. There was no hiding it, not with his clouded eyes or even his sunglasses. There were just some things that he couldn't even begin to pretend to see.
Oh well. He got around just fine without being able to see. His hybrid sense helped, along with his ability he'd inherited from his unknown parents. He sensed everything around him perfectly, even what was going on underneath him in a sphere of vibration sensing. There were creatures scuttling around in the sewer below, cars off to one side of him on the street, people all around on the sidewalk. Buildings on both sides. He couldn't sense anything in the air, but he'd learned how to detect incoming projectiles based on the displacement of the air when they moved toward him and their scent. It made him very difficult to sneak up on.
The hybrid walked into a bookstore and waved to the owner. She was always so nice to him. He knew exactly where the braille section was and he started collecting some books. None of them had any decorative jackets or graphics on them like the other books. They just had those raised bumps that every other braille book had that made it possible for the blind to read. Jack's staff was propped up against the shelf at the end of the row and as he started getting his books, he heard small quick footsteps and a giggle.
"Look Mommy! A pretty stick!" and his staff was gone! Jack quickly set his books down and hurried toward the sound of the little girl's laughter and listened the to whistling air as she swung it around making light saber sounds.
"Honey! Put that down. It isn't yours. It belongs to a blind person. You took a blind guy's stick!" her mother scolded her. The girl was probably only three or four based on her height and voice. Jack smiled and came up behind her, stopping just outside the range of the swinging staff.
"And I'd be the blind guy you took it from kiddo. I need it sweetie. Can I have it back?" he asked and knelt in front of her. She shied away, holding it close.
"But it's my light saber!" she said, clearly not understanding what she'd done.
"Amanda!" her mother started but Jack shook his head and she stopped.
"I know. What if I traded you?" He asked and patted himself down, taking a bag of chocolates from his pocket. "Here. I'll give you these chocolates if you give me back my staff. They're ......uh from Luke Skywalker! He's a friend of mine. He wants you to have them." the little girl squealed and dropped the staff and snatched the chocolates. Her mother thanked Jack and apologized and took her daughter away. Jack laughed and picked his staff back up and then he sensed some vampire nearby and frowned a bit.
"I hope you aren't the sort who likes to cause trouble. Because if you are, I'd hate to send you to the afterlife with stories of getting sent there by a blind guy." he said, his tone cheerful and very quite, but the threat was there. He couldn't tell if this vampire was the crimson kind or the gentle golden eyed one but by wasn't taking chances.
